School is out and National Doughnut Day on June 6 is ready to get the summer started off on a sweet note. Here are a half dozen of our favorite locally owned and operated bakeries and doughnut shops where you can be sure to get your sugar fix.
Maynard’s Donuts & Coffee
875 E. Nine Mile Road Suite 9 and 2155 W. Nine Mile Road, Pensacola.
Maynard’s Donuts & Coffee has become a dessert destination in Pensacola, transporting customers back in time to a Willy Wonka-esque world of childlike wonder. The 14-foot pink sprinkled doughnut outside the storefront greets you and lures you inside to the rows of decorated doughnuts. Their colorful portfolio ranges from raised doughnuts, filled bismarks, doughnut holes to their most famous cake doughnuts (which you’ll have to get there early for, since they sell out the fastest). You’ll have to choose whether to indulge in one of their more decadent options like their best-selling Bavarian frosted doughnut with chocolate and filled with crème, or their more fruit-forward options like the light and whipped Orange Blossom. The donut shops have had a couple of different owners over the years, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the team’s creativity, which is why the flavor varieties are constantly rotating, in addition to their average of eight stable options served daily. Some of the more eye-catching creations include their nostalgic PB & J doughnut, tangy Key Lime Pie, sweet and salty Maple Bacon, crunchy Fruit Pebble, flaky Toasted Coconut, rich Oreo Awesome and tropical Mango Tango.
Milton Quality Bakery
6727 Caroline St.
Milton Quality Bakery sets the bar high in Santa Rosa County for generations of homemade baked goods from the same location for over 60 years. The doughnuts are one of the consistently good sweets to snag, as the tried-and-true recipes have been carried down the family line and everything is still made from scratch. Along with the classic doughnut varieties, they will play around with seasonal flavors, like the occasional spring strawberries and crème, summer lemon cake, or fall pumpkin spice doughnut. While the hometown bakery is simple and unassuming, it has been the backdrops of family memories for years and brought in its fair share of accolades, including the Sweetest Bakery in Florida by bakery manufacturer and ingredient supplier Dawn Foods.
Lickin Good Donuts
Multiple locations
Lickin Good Donuts is part of a string of family-owned doughnut shops in Southwest Alabama and Northwest Florida, with local locations at 6675 Pine Forest Road in Bellview, 8645 Pensacola Boulevard and 4653 Watkins Street in Pace. Lickin Good is a local favorite and has secured an average a 4.6 Google rating for its local stores for a reason. The homemade doughnuts come with a variety of toppings and fillings, including fruit jams and rich creams, along with larger-than-life apple fritters and cinnamon rolls. Among their most popular is their sweet and savory maple bacon, which is a maple-glazed doughnut topped with crispy bacon bits.
Breeze Donuts and Kolaches
2699 Gulf Breeze Parkway
Tucked away off Gulf Breeze Parkway, Breeze Donuts welcomes customers in with a case full of confections ranging from the classic chocolate, glazed and cinnamon sugar, to more elaborate concoctions, such as Oreo, Fruity Pebbles and maple bacon flavored. They are freshly baked, a distinction that comes through in flavor, like the fresh fruit taste in the blueberry cake doughnut and crumbled bacon in the maple bacon, which is marinated and baked in house. They also come equipped with a wide variety of beverages to wash it down, including iced coffees, and fruit and milk teas.
Delicious Donuts
702 Gulf Beach Highway
If you’re looking for something a little closer to Pensacola’s west side, Delicious Donuts is a newcomer in the area’s doughnut scene and offers homemade doughnuts in a variety of flavors and sizes at affordable prices. While the inside of the shop is unassuming, the doughnuts come packed with flavor, like their lemon-filled, Bavarian white cream and giant apple fritters. They also offer a wide variety of breakfast sandwiches, burritos, kolaches, coffees, smoothies and boba tea.
J’s Bakery and Cafe
2014 N. 12 Ave.
J’s Bakery has been an East Hill staple for over 75 years, with some of its recipes in use since 1946, and in May they opened a second location at 1124 W. Garden St. Like Milton Quality Bakery, generations of families have been coming here for years. You can find a variety for frosted, sprinkled, and stuffed doughnuts along with other delicacies, such as cinnamon rolls and fruit danishes. Since J’s is a full-fledged-bakery, browse the famed petit fours, smiley face cookies and rich chocolate brownies to bag up for the road.
