St. Lucie County eyes landing two airlines; announcements are imminent, county leader says

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The announcement of multiple commercial airlines coming to Treasure Coast International Airport could be less than two weeks away, at least according to one county commissioner.

At a Nov. 13 town hall hosted by the North Beach Association, Commissioner Cathy Townsend said the public will know the names of two airlines by the end of the month.

It was in August that Townsend told TCPalm commercial passenger service could begin at the airport sometime in November, and assured it would happen by the end of the year. It is unclear how quickly an airline would be able to begin service after an announcement is made.

The county-owned airport, north of Fort Pierce, has spent years making upgrades to its facilities in anticipation of commercial passenger service. It received official certification from the Federal Aviation Administration for such flights in October 2024, and has continued with upgrades since, primarily to the existing terminal building. In recent months, terminal seating and Transportation Security Administration equipment have been installed in anticipation of passenger flights.

At the town hall, Townsend also shared some details on potential destinations of the two airlines.

One airline would make at least weekly flights “to the northeast,” Townsend said. The second likely would fly to and from the Bahamas. Treasure Coast International Airport already has a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility, which is used by charter and private flights, many of which are arriving from the Bahamas and other Caribbean locations.

Nearby, Vero Beach Regional Airport has been served by Breeze Airways since 2023. JetBlue plans to begin serving New York City and Boston from Vero Beach beginning Dec. 11. American Airlines plans to launch service from Vero Beach to its Charlotte, North Carolina, hub on Feb. 12.
