Mosley High’s medical academy students got a hands-on experience in the medical field during their morning visit to Ascension Sacred Heart in Panama City on March 28.
The students participated in realistic simulations, including trauma response and diagnosing heart attacks.
For many, the day reinforced their interest in health care, while others discovered new fields that they hadn’t considered.
“It was fascinating seeing how the nurses learn,” Chase Peterson, a Mosley senior, said after witnessing a cardiopulmonary resuscitation exercise. “It really gives you a good idea of what our future could look like, and if this is something that we’re really interested in pursuing.”
“We were able to watch Dr. (Amir) Haghighat prepare for an actual heart surgery on a patient,” Yva Toole, a Mosley senior, said describing the hospital visit. “Just watching them do the controls, watching the setup … he wasn’t in surgery yet, but just prepping … it was really cool.”
The curriculum at Mosley includes anatomy (as well as dissection), AP biology, monthly guest speakers from health care professionals and a senior internship opportunity at a doctor’s office or hospital.
Dr. John Wade, Mosley High’s pre-med director, said the program started 12 years ago with about 10 students. Enrollment is up to 150 students now, he said.
Wade added that Mosley’s pre-med students learn how to keep it REAL: Relationships (cultivating meaningful relationships); Equip (equipping students with knowledge); Attitude (maintaining a positive attitude); and Leadership (transferring skills, or leading the underclassmen).
