The Florida State football team held its first scrimmage of fall camp on Tuesday night inside Doak Campbell Stadium, and head coach Mike Norvell seemed pleased with what he saw from his team afterwards.
It was Ashton Daniels’ first time serving as FSU’s quarterback in a game-like situation, and Norvell once again praised him for his confidence and command of the offense.
“I thought he did a good job,” Norvell told Chris Nee of Noles247. “You could tell, I mean he’s got a lot of confidence in what we’re asking him to do. There were still, right now there’s a lot of things as we’re progressing versus different coverages, different looks, making sure that receivers, the timing, everything being on the same page just with that repetition. So I thought he’s done a really, really good job.
“You feel his command, his control, where to go with the football. From where we left in spring to where he’s been in the six days and even some of the decisions that he had tonight, you can just feel that command and some really nice throws on third down, the placements, where he’s able to place the football has just been, it’s been really good.”
Daniels is entering his final season of college football, and Norvell has been impressed with how quickly he has absorbed the FSU offense and taken control of the group since he arrived. He is looking to take another step, and will have plenty of skill talent to work with.
The Seminoles have an All-ACC wide receiver in Duce Robinson and one of the most explosive wideouts in the country in Micahi Danzy. The running back rotation also looks to have improved over the offseason, with Ousmane Kromah, Quintrevion Wisner, and Samuel Singleton Jr. giving them three quality options and differing skillsets.
While he has to keep improving, this is the most talent Daniels has played with, and he has locked down the starting job at FSU, beating out Kevin Sperry. Daniels has completed 60.8% of his passes for 3,986 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions for them, also rushing for 1,117 yards and nine touchdowns.
It will be up to Daniels to lead the group as FSU fights to get back to a bowl game, but it sounds like he took a positive step on Tuesday night.
