A 38-year-old Naples man has died after falling off a ladder and landing on his head outside the former Saks Off Fifth store in Naples.
On Thursday, May 21, the Naples Police Department responded to a medical emergency at 4135 9th Street North, where a Saks Off Fifth that closed down in February because of bankruptcy.
Officers found Verlincks Sylvestre on the ground next to a ladder and multiple pieces of sheet metal, according to a police report.
Sylvestre was transported to the hospital but pronounced dead less than an hour later.
One witness saw Sylvestre fall off the ladder and strike the pavement head first after a piece of metal he was trying to pull off the building began to slip.
The reporting officer observed a large area of blood in front of the store, the report states.
One of Sylvestre’s coworkers told authorities that Sylvestre and his coworkers were tasked with removing the Saks Off Fifth business sign and that one of them did not fully secure the ladder to the building.
Sylvestre was working for the company Facilities Pro-Sweep at the time.
Facilities Pro-Sweep did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Naples Daily News.
According to the police report, a report has been completed with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The report has not been made publicly available by OSHA.
