HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS — Lily Martin’s run at a second straight gold at state fell just short at Las Colinas Wednesday.
A year after helping lead South Walton to a team state title, the Seahawks’ junior saw her two-stroke lead disappear as she shot a second-day 73 and Ryan Donaldson went low with a 4-under-par 67 for a two-day 140 to win the 2A state crown.
The 2-over 73 followed a 1-under 70 for Martin, who was the only golfer in the field to go under par Tuesday. Her 143 was a big improvement over last year’s 155 (80-75), which had her tied for 16th.
Teammte Neely Kight, who last year tied for seventh with a two-day 150 (78-72), followed up Tuesday’s 77 with a 74 to finish 15th. As a team, the Seahawks’s title defense fell well short as South Walton placed 12th with a 733 (364-369). American Heritage won easily with a 601 (304-297).
