Labor Day protests dubbed “Workers Over Billionaires” are planned nationwide, calling for an end to the “billionaire takeover” impacting working-class individuals. There are two planned events on the Treasure Coast.
“On September 1st, we will continue the movement we launched together on May 1st, standing in solidarity with all our communities under attack and fighting for real wins for all our people,” according to the Port St. Lucie event description.

May Day protests kicked off on May 1, followed by the “No Kings Day” and “Good Trouble Lives On” protests in June and July, respectively.

Why do we celebrate Labor Day?
Labor Day is celebrated each year on the first Monday in September. It has been this way since 1894 after President Grover Cleveland signed a law passed by Congress designating the first Monday in September for workers.
This year, Labor Day is on Sept. 1, 2025.
The holiday celebration is rooted in the labor movement of the 19th century and originated during a dismal time for America’s workers, who faced long hours, low wages and unsafe conditions.
As labor unions and activists advocated and fought for better treatment for workers at the height of the Industrial Revolution, the idea arose to establish a day dedicated to celebrating the members of trade and labor unions, according to History.com.
