The discussion between the Jacksonville Jaguars’ front office/coaching staff and Anton Harrison last week was brief. They wanted to know if Harrison was game for flipping from right tackle to left tackle in training camp.
“Let’s do it,” was Harrison’s succinct reply.
The Jaguars’ right tackle in his first three NFL seasons, Harrison worked at left tackle Aug. 6 for the sixth consecutive practice, furthering the assumption he was be there for the Sept. 13 season opener against the Cleveland Browns.
“Really comfortable,” Harrison said of the switch. “It’s like riding a bike getting back over there. It’s what I did in college so getting back to doing it every day, it’s not really a big change.”
Harrison started 23 games at left tackle for Oklahoma.
“I feel I can play left tackle so I’m definitely not against it,” he said.
Harrison said making the switch hasn’t been a big lift.
“Surprisingly so,” he said. “It’s really flipping everything in your head playbook-wise and trying to be fast off the ball and not thinking, ‘You’re not on the right side anymore.’”
Does Harrison have a heightened sense of urgency or pressure knowing he is protecting quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s blindside?
“I wouldn’t say that because I don’t want to lose any reps, right side or left side,” Harrison said. “I always have the same mindset of, ‘Dominate, don’t lose any reps and protect Trevor at all costs.’”
The Jaguars returned for their seventh training camp practice after an off day on Aug. 6. Here is a recap:
Player attendance
Did not practice: LT Cole Van Lanen (right knee) and OT Garrett DiGiorgio (foot) remain on the physically unable to perform list. LB Jack Kiser (right knee) missed his sixth consecutive missed practice. RG Patrick Mekari (back) continues to wear a helmet, but not practice. LB Jared Bartlett (leg) missed his first practice.
Limited practice work: CB Christian Braswell (lower body) did individual work only for the seventh consecutive practice.
New injury: G Emmanuel Pregnon was injured in team work and did not return.
Returned to practice: RB Chris Rodriguez Jr., (left foot) and DT Arik Armstead (rest) after sitting out on Aug. 4.
Top plays
It might have been a sack, but QB Trevor Lawrence delivered a downfield dart to WR Parker Washington, who got open on a deep over route.
Thumbs up
QB Trevor Lawrence: After a clunky practice on Aug. 4, he was sharper in this practice, completing seven of his eight pass attempts.
WR Josh Cameron: He continues to make good plays, the latest being a leaping downfield catch in tight coverage. (S Eric Murray would have sacked QB Nick Mullens, for the record).
LB Ventrell Miller: Early in team work, he stripped RB Ameer Abdullah and recovered the fumble in the same motion.
S Antonio Johnson: He had two pass break-ups.
Thumbs down
The humidity: It was by far the stickiest day of training camp.
Linebacker depth: The Jaguars are being tested at linebacker because first Jack Kiser and now Jared Bartlett are injured and Foye Oluokun’s snaps are being managed, leaving them six full-time healthy linebackers.
