With the Jacksonville Jaguars’ first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers quickly approaching, let’s take a step back and take a look at where James Gladstone’s team stands from a salary cap perspective at this time.
The Jaguars currently have $18.814 million in available cap space, according to Over the Cap. Compared to the rest of the NFL, this ranks as the 21st most.
Any major spending when it comes to roster building is well past us at this point. However, the Jaguars, along with every other NFL team, do have some additional cap expenses coming down the road.
The Jaguars will need cap space to assemble the practice squad and in-season reserves available for any potential spending at that point. This could include making a trade, a free agent signing, or practice squad elevations on game days.
Also of note, the Jaguars currently have the sixth-largest amount of dead cap on the books this season, with $64.751 million of their cap space going to players who are no longer on the team. This is due to the heavy roster turnover and veteran contracts that Gladstone moved on from this offseason.
With that said, overall, the Jaguars are positioned well cap-wise, and Gladstone has the flexibility to continue tweaking the roster as he sees fit by making any additions. It’s also not as if any free agent signing at this stage of the offseason will break the bank.
