A man with a history of arrests in Volusia County stole a BMW convertible from Bicentennial Park in Ormond Beach on Monday, Dec. 8, by “teleporting” into it, Volusia County sheriff’s deputies said.
Calvin Johnson, 36, who deputies said is homeless, was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended or revoked license.
According to an arrest report, Johnson was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center after the crash and was under guard while being treated for his injuries. Once cleared, he was scheduled to be transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail.
Transient steals car while owner walks dog in park
The vehicle, a 2018 BMW Convertible 230i, was stolen while the owner was walking his dog at Bicentennial Park on Ocean Shore Boulevard in Ormond Beach. The victim is heard in a body camera video saying he left the car keys in the unlocked vehicle.
As deputies were investigating the vehicle theft, they received information that a BMW had crashed at the intersection of North U.S. Highway 1 and Plantation Oaks Boulevard in Ormond Beach, the arrest report said.
A witness can be heard in a body camera recording telling responding officers that a 2018 BMW 230i convertible was traveling at about 130 mph and had wrecked. Deputies found Johnson at the crash scene.
Johnson was taken to the hospital. In an ambulance.
