About 45 Home Depot volunteers descended on a Jacksonville housing complex for veterans with outdoor beautification in mind.
The group built a gazebo, fire pit and accompanying patio furniture, as well as adding landscaping and conducting a general cleanup at Caroline Village, which provides affordable housing for veterans who have experienced homelessness.
The work at the Justina Road property was spearheaded by the Home Depot Foundation, in partnership with Community Solutions. The national nonprofit working to end homelessness purchased the Caroline Village in 2022.
“This isn’t just about landscaping or building furniture,” Home Depot store manager Micheal Trebony said. “It’s about showing our deep gratitude and ensuring our nation’s heroes have a safe, welcoming place to call home.”
As of January 2024, about 32,882 veterans were experiencing homelessness in the United States, according to the Veterans Affairs. About 4,500 of them are in Florida, according to the Bob Woodruff Foundation.
