Milton seeking solutions after losing only cold weather homeless shelter
The city of Milton is working to address growing issues with homelessness, including creating a new ordinance banning camping on public property and weighing options for a new cold weather shelter after the only one in Santa Rosa County stopped offering the service.
City leaders say Ferris Hill Baptist Church in Milton long met the need, but beginning this year, it’s no longer an option.
The church, which served 10 to 15 individuals on approximately 20 cold nights a year, is ceasing its shelter operations due to church growth and a change in direction.
“We respect that, but that does create a gap in services in our community,” Milton City Manager Ed Spears said. “It’s not a lot of individuals who are impacted, but we still want to make sure we have that resource available in the community. We’re looking at a bunch of different options.”
Attorney says firing ‘appropriate penalty’ for school worker’s inappropriate conduct
A petition from the Santa Rosa School District attorney lists several reasons for the termination of district IT specialist Keith Elliott.
The petition, filed July 31, calls on Administrative Law Judge Yolanda Green to request the county School Board to vote again to stand by a previous vote to fire Elliott.
“Respondent’s misconduct is not limited to a single act or momentary lapse in judgment. Rather, the record establishes repeated dishonesty, misuse of anonymous communications, public disparagement of students and employees, and conduct that undermined the student welfare and District trust,” attorney Derek Dzwonkowski said in the petition.

A GoFundMe has gone live for Emily Shelton, the 21-year-old woman who was forced to make an emergency landing due to engine failure on Interstate 10 earlier this week.
Landing a small aircraft on a busy stretch of interstate is an impressive feat alone, but video of the landing showed the young pilot navigate her plane underneath the overhead sign gantry over the interstate.
