Florida State baseball threw a combined no-hitter over seven innings in a 12-1 run-rule victory over Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday, March 17.
It’s the first overall no-hitter since 2019’s Opening Day and the 11th overall in program history. It’s the first seven-inning no-hitter since 1968.
FSU’s pitchers allowed no hits, but issued three walks and hit three batters, and allowed one runner to reach on a fielder’s choice. The lone run came when Brodie Purcell hit a batter with the bases loaded. The Seminoles’ (17-3) pitching staff struck out nine, and Cooper Whithed recorded a team-high six strikeouts over 3.1 innings.
“Exciting game. You don’t see no-hitters very often,” FSU head coach Link Jarrett said postgame. “You can go look back through the history books. It’s been a long time since it happened. We are in a very different era of college baseball right now with the way things, offensively, are playing. I’m proud of the guys.”
Purcell struck out one over 1.2 innings of relief, and Cole Stokes ended the game with two innings of relief. He had a pair of strikeouts, and he allowed a walk in the seventh inning that was nullified by a game-ending double play.
Myles Bailey recorded four RBI, which gives him a team high 25 RBI this season, including an RBI double and a three-run home run. His double scored the first run of the night, followed by a pair of fielders choice that scored two.
The Seminoles added four runs in the second inning, with an Eli Putnam single and an error on a Noah Sheffield grounder, allowing four runners to cross the plate. A wild pitch and an error in the sixth scored a pair of runs before Bailey hit his three-run home run to secure the run-rule.
