Florida State baseball surrendered an early four-run lead as No. 9 Auburn came back to beat the Seminoles 8-5 on Saturday, Feb. 21, in the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
It’s the first loss of the season for No. 16/11 FSU (4-1).
The Seminoles scored four runs in the first inning on five hits, but their bats went cold for the remainder of the game. FSU scored a run on a wild pitch and tallied just two hits after the first inning. The Seminoles struck out 13 times and only walked twice.
Brayden Dowd led off the game with a double that bounced off the centerfield wall and just missed being a home run. He was quickly brought home on an RBI single from Noah Sheffield. A single from Brody DeLamielleure and a wild pitch scored the final two runs of the inning.
Auburn scored its first two runs of the game in the third inning on a fielder’s choice and a solo home run from Bristol Carter, who went 3-for-3 against the Seminoles.
FSU was ahead 4-3 with two outs and two War Eagle base runners on in the fifth inning before Auburn took the lead. Jace Estes and DeLamielleure collided while chasing a blooper down the right field line, which resulted in a two-run triple for Chase Fralick and a 5-4 Auburn lead.
A pair of sacrifice flies gave Auburn two insurance runs. Chase Williams struck out swinging with runners on second and third base in the eighth, but it was a dropped third strike, which allowed Williams to reach second and Gabe Fraser to score from third base as the ball rolled around the backstop.
The War Eagles scored one more run in the eighth, going ahead 8-5, after a wild pitch from Ben Barrett, who struck out three in his relief appearance.
FSU went down in order in the top of the ninth as Sheffield grounded out before Myles Baiely and Cal Fisher both struck out to end the game.
The final game of the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series for FSU is set for 3:30 on Sunday against Nebraska. The Seminoles haven’t named a starter for the game.
