John Winn Miller – a veteran journalist who once led the newsroom of the Tallahassee Democrat during one of the most tumultuous political moments in modern American history – is being inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame on April 9.
Miller served as executive editor of the Tallahassee Democrat beginning in 1999, placing him at the center of coverage of Florida’s historic 2000 presidential election recount. From the state capital newsroom, he directed reporting on the chaotic 36-day battle over ballots that ultimately decided the race between George W. Bush and Al Gore.
The day after the September 11 attacks in 2001, Miller drove to Washington, D.C., to help Knight Ridder, the now-defunct company that owned the Democrat at the time, establish its first night desk to coordinate coverage from correspondents around the world. He was picked because of his earlier experience as an international reporter.
Before arriving in Tallahassee, Miller built a reputation as a foreign correspondent covering wars in Beirut, Chad and Eritrea and reporting from assignments across Europe, North Africa and Asia. He also briefly served as Rome bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal’s European edition.
Earlier in his career, Miller worked at the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky, where he helped produce an investigative series that spurred statewide education reform. The work won the 1990 public service award from the Society of Professional Journalists, top honors from Investigative Reporters and Editors, the Selden Ring Award and recognition as a Pulitzer Prize finalist.
Miller later served as publisher of newspapers in Washington state and New Hampshire before returning to Kentucky. In retirement he has written novels, including “The Hunt for Peggy C” and “Rescue Run,” with the next installment in the series, “Miriam in the Shadows,” scheduled for release June 2, 2026.
