Twelve hits resulted in 12 runs for Florida softball (49-10) as the Gators beat Florida A&M in a 12-0 run-rule victory to kickoff the NCAA Gainesville Regional on Friday, May 15.
Florida, the NCAA tournament’s No. 6 seed overall, handled the visiting Rattlers with ease, hanging lopsided frames in each inning.
After scoring just one run in the bottom of the first inning, the Gators scored four, three and four runs in each of the next innings, respectively. All the while, Florida kept FAMU’s offense from scratching across a run.
Leading the Gators to their most lopsided home game of the season was Taylor Shumaker, who went 3-for-4 for five RBIs and a home run, which marked the team’s 100th of the season. Jocelyn Erickson, Ava Brown and Gabi Comia also turned in multi-hit performances in the win.
From the circle, ace Keagan Rothrock got the ball to start and pitched three near-perfect innings, giving up no hits, no runs and striking out six. Katelynn Oxley and Leah Stevens each pitched an inning of relief with Oxley giving up the Rattlers’ only hit of the day.
Florida now moves on to play the winner of Georgia Tech and Texas State on Saturday at 10 a.m.
