A Florida mom and her 2-year-old daughter died after being struck by lightning, police said.
Kenya Glasgow, 31, and her daughter were found on a sidewalk in Margate about 2:30 p.m., Aug. 23, according to the Margate Police Department. They were transported to two separate hospitals where both were pronounced dead.
The police department expressed its “deepest condolences to the victims’ family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time” as the investigation continues.
Where is Margate, Florida?
Margate is about 10 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale.
The National Weather Service office in Miami issued a Special Weather Statement in the area the afternoon mom and daughter were struck.
In another lightning strike nearby, paramedics took a child to a trauma center after receiving a 911 call said the person had been struck by lightning near Boynton Beach.
How likely is it to be struck by lightning in Florida?
About 37 million lightning strikes hit the ground in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The odds of being struck by lightning each year are less than one in a million, and almost 90% of all lightning strike victims survive.
Not including the two deaths yesterday, there have been 9 fatal lightning strikes nationwide in 2026, according to the National Weather Service. Two of those nine deaths occurred in Florida.
