We’ve only had one official week of high school football in Florida, but it was enough to prompt some major shakeups in the USA TODAY poll.
Columbus, which beat Miami Southridge 14-7 in a weather-shortened game, takes over the top spot in Class 7A. The Explorers received nine of 11 possible first-place votes, with Vero Beach picking up the other two.
Jones, which opened the season at No. 2 in Class 4A, jumped into the top spot after a 35-0 win at Winter Park. American Heritage, the defending state champion, dropped to No. 2 depite an epic come-from-behind win against St. Joseph’s (Pennsylvania) in Week 1.
Madison County lost on the field in Week 1, but still won in the poll. The Cowboys received six first-place votes in the Rural Class, one more than Hawthorne. Madison County and Hawthorne, which have met in the state championship game three of the past four years, were tied for No. 1 in the poll last week.
West Boca (Class 6A), Miami Northwestern (3A), Bolles (2A) and Chaminade-Madonna (1A) were unanimous first-place selections in their respective classes.
St. Thomas Aquinas received nine first-place votes to remain No. 1 in Class 5A. Tampa Bay Tech got the other two first-place votes.
