The Gator Nation had plenty of reasons to roar on Saturday night.
Inside a charged-up O’Connell Center, SEC front-runners Florida and Arkansas went toe-to-toe, but only one was left standing. The Gators reaffirmed their place atop the SEC with a resounding performance to topple the Razorbacks in a 111-77 victory.
It was a performance befitting a defending champion. From the opening tip, the Orange and Blue looked every bit like a team fixated on cutting down nets again.
Behind a balanced offensive strike and smothering defense, the Gators created separation early and never looked back. It was a showcase of depth and discipline for the defending champions, who are in the driver’s seat for the outright regular-season conference title.
Florida controlled the tempo from the opening tip, using pace and spacing to gain an advantage. By halftime, the lead had ballooned to 19 as the Gators shot nearly 60% from the field.
Meanwhile, Arkansas struggled to find its footing. Projected NBA lottery pick Darius Acuff Jr. started the game 3-for-12 from the field. The Gators’ defense harassed Acuff and his teammates, taking the fight to the Razorbacks early.
Sophomore Olivier Rioux — the 7-foot-9-inch center the fans are always clamoring for — even saw game time as the clock wound down.
As Todd Golden’s team continues its charge toward March, the win further cements Florida’s grip on the regular-season SEC title. Here are the main takeaways from the Orange and Blue’s ninth straight win.
Gators dominate the paint
It was no surprise Florida asserted itself through force and physicality all evening. Once again, second-chance points helped the Gators put plenty of space between themselves and John Calipari’s team. Rueben Chinyelu posted his 17th double-double of the season Saturday, grabbing 10 rebounds before the half.
The Gators posted a 26-15 rebounding advantage by the intermission. Florida either blocked or altered most of the Razorbacks’ penetration opportunities, while driving Arkansas off the 3-point line and forcing them into the teeth of the defense. The opposition couldn’t get anything going inside or outside: Arkansas was held to one 3-point basket until late in the second half.
Florida is in ‘the zone’ right now
This is what a team peaking at the right time looks like.
The Gators made the Razorbacks, one of the nation’s most explosive offenses, look pedestrian. Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh were all over the court on both ends of the floor. Haugh’s 22 points led all scorers.
Florida shot 8-for-16 from the 3-point line, its third straight game with eight or more from beyond the arc. In their sixth straight win against a ranked opponent, the Gators topped their season high in points.
Everybody eats
The scoring onslaught, which came in waves, simply overwhelmed the Razorbacks.
Florida won the bench scoring battle 20-6. With 10 timely points on four-of-five shooting, Isaiah Brown led the reserves, providing some electricity with one of the baskets coming on an emphatic transition dunk with 3:15 remaining in the first half. Seven Gators scored in double-figures, including Urban Klavzar, who knocked down four 3-pointers.
Xaivien Lee was instrumental in controlling the tempo and getting his teammates involved, leading the team with five assists and knocking down big shots throughout the night.
