Hoping to play for UCF, Kansas transfer Dean Miller is taking the NCAA to court.
The edge rusher filed a lawsuit in Orange County, Florida, seeking an additional year of eligibility, per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports. He plans to suit up for the Knights in 2026 if allowed, though his signing was never formally announced.
Miller attended College of the Canyons, a junior college in Santa Clarita, California, in 2021. He then joined Kansas, redshirting in 2022 and playing each of the last three years.
Across the last two seasons, Miller racked up 13½ tackles for loss and seven sacks. Six of those sacks came in 2024 when current UCF edge coach Mike Dawson served as a defensive analyst for the Jayhawks.
Miller asked the NCAA for a waiver, arguing his one season of junior college should not count toward his NCAA eligibility. The NCAA denied his request on April 28, according to the lawsuit.
UCF appealed the NCAA’s denial, but its attempt was rejected on May 28.
“This denial is particularly egregious because it is flatly inconsistent with relief granted to similarly situated athletes, including Diego Pavia and all other athletes who would have exhausted eligibility during the 2024-25 academic year,” the lawsuit states, “and it defies the NCAA’s own articulated guidelines for granting waivers when circumstances warrant relief.”
Miller is set to earn $300,000 if he plays for the Knights this fall. He is represented in the case by Heitner Legal.
