Depth at key position brought into question after Jaguars v. Saints game

A new positional need has seemed to emerge for the Jacksonville Jaguars following the team’s preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints.

Well, maybe it’s not a new need, but it’s certainly enhanced.

The backup quarterback role is in question for the Jaguars.

Nick Mullens, who got the start against the Saints, has been up and down dating back to offseason programs. That then continued in the preseason.

Mullens finished the game just 3-for-7 passing for 33 yards with an interception, per PFF. Carter Bradley was a modest 10-for-17 for 105 yards with a touchdown and an interception as well.

Beyond the stat lines, the Jaguars’ offense struggled to move the ball consistently through the air, while accuracy, decision-making, and pocket presence for Mullens and Bradley were questionable at times.

Not helping the quarterbacks was the injured offensive line unit, but I imagine that Liam Coen and Co. were hoping to see more from both quarterbacks.

All that said, most teams struggled to find consistent quarterback play from their backup — this isn’t only a Jaguars thing.

I also don’t expect Jacksonville to make a move at this time either, but perhaps during roster cutdowns, GM James Gladstone does look through potential waiver claim candidates.

Not to be overlooked either when discussing the backup quarterback role is that this player provides support throughout the week to the starter, providing another set of eyes and a different perspective in meetings, on the practice field, and on the sidelines. Mullens’ experience, both in the NFL and in Liam Coen’s scheme, does have value.
