Daytona Tortugas prospect Alfredo Duno wins Florida State League MVP award

Alfredo Duno has jumped in prospect rankings, set records and earned awards this season. Now, he just claimed his biggest prize to date.

On Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Florida State League announced the Daytona Tortugas’ catcher as its 2025 Most Valuable Player.

He becomes the second Tortuga to receive the honor, joining outfielder Aristides Aquino in 2016. In Daytona Beach baseball history, he also stands alongside Larry Ray, who won the 1980 league MVP award for the Daytona Beach Astros, and Brandon Sing, who did the same for the 2004 Daytona Cubs.

Duno posted a .287 batting average with a .948 OPS. He crushed 32 doubles and 18 home runs, knocked in 81 runs and scored another 78. All four of those numbers led the FSL.

The 19-year-old Venezuela native also topped the leaderboards in on-base percentage (.430), slugging (.518), OPS, walks (95), extra-base hits (52) and total bases (202). He was second in batting average and hits.

Duno grabbed three FSL Player of the Week awards and also was named Player of the Month in August. He suited up in the Futures Game in July.

On Tuesday, he was also listed as the catcher on the FSL’s postseason All-Star team, sharing the recognition with former Tortugas infield teammates Carlos Sanchez and Sammy Stafura.

Sanchez leapt to High-A ball in June. The Cincinnati Reds traded Stafura to the Pittsburgh Pirates in July.

2025 was Duno’s second season in Daytona. He spent the first month and a half of 2024 with the Tortugas before suffering a year-ending rib injury.

He established new single-season Tortugas records in walks, RBI, on-base percentage and OPS.
