Emeka Egbuka is off to one of the hottest starts of any rookie, regardless of position, in recent memory.
The Bucs’ offense has been dealing with constant injury blows, and yet, they remain one of the more effective groups in the NFL. The main reason for that is Baker Mayfield, but he is being supported by Egbuka, who is playing like a seasoned veteran. Through five games, the rookie has 38 catches for 445 yards and five touchdowns, which has him on pace for a record-breaking year and superstardom.
Through it all, Egbuka remains grounded in his process and with himself, as he explained to reporters post-game on Sunday.
Egbuka told reporters, “I don’t enter any seasons of my life with too many expectations when it comes to statistics or anything really. I’m just trying to honor and glorify God, be obedient to whatever He’s called me to. So I feel like He has me in Tampa for a reason. And that purpose is bigger than football, I believe. So just trying to use my platform to be able to impact people in any way I can and just give glory to Him when success comes my way and when it doesn’t, still praise Him all the more.”
While Mike Evans is out, Egbuka is now the clear-cut WR1.
When Evans returns, will he retain that role, or will it remain in the hands of Egbuka? The future is now for the Bucs and it is going to make for a very interesting few months for Jason Licht as some tough decisions may be ahead.
