$1.2 million HUD cut could make 112 more people homeless on Treasure Coast
The Trump administration announced June 1 it will change its policy to prioritize substance abuse and mental health treatment first, instead of a more successful, decades-old program that puts housing the homeless first.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development changes are expected to cut over $1.2 million for Treasure Coast nonprofits tasked with addressing homelessness. At least 112 people could lose their housing, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

Wall Street mogul claims $16M yacht was ‘sabatoged’ and sunk in Florida
Florida is investigating a $16 million Italian custom luxury sailing yacht’s sinking in the Fort Pierce port in May, and the Wall Street mogul who owns the Legacy claims it was “sabotaged.”
Yacht owner and longtime Palm Beach County resident Peter Halmos told TCPalm someone used a crowbar to break into his 158-foot yacht, disabled alarms and cameras, drilled a hole in the hull, and opened various compartments to flood it.

Port St. Lucie voters could get a voice in doubling their trash pickup days
Port St. Lucie residents will likely be able to vote in November on whether they want to reinstate twice-a-week trash pickup or keep it at once a week. However, the results would be nonbinding and would serve as a recommendation to City Hall.
Voters would be asked if they support restoring twice-weekly residential collections, that were reduced to weekly in 2022, and increasing the annual cost 28% in 2028 — from the current $467 by at least $131, to $598, with additional increases expected in later years.

Vero Beach train strike marks 10th fatal local Brightline incident
A man was hit and killed by a Brightline passenger train on June 21 in Vero Beach in an apparent suicide, Indian River County Fire Rescue officials said.
The June 21 death of a man struck by a Brightline train in Vero Beach is the 10th fatal incident involving a Brightline train since 2023.
