Breaking: Interstate 4 eastbound lane closed in Lakeland because of fuel spill

Florida Department of Transportation has announced an emergency closure of the eastbound inside lane and shoulder of in the Lakeland area effective 3:42 p.m. Sept. 16.

Emergency crews are racing to respond to a diesel fuel spill caused by a semi-truck incident on I-4 near Exit 38 (State Road 33) in Lakeland.

The fuel spill has caused damage to the eastbound inside lane and shoulder, prompting immediate closure for cleanup and repairs.

FDOT said the affected area spans approximately one-quarter mile east from Exit 38. The lane closure is expected to remain in place overnight, possibly into Sept. 17.

Motorists traveling through the area should expect delays and are advised to proceed with caution. Detour routes may be necessary, so drivers should plan ahead and allow additional time for travel.
