Breaking: Buccaneers agree to extension with cornerback Zyon McCollum

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have done a good job of staying on top of their looming free agents to avoid them hitting the market and losing them. Earlier this week, it was Luke Goedeke who received a massive extension from general manager Jason Licht and the team. On Friday, it was another young star’s turn.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Bucs and cornerback Zyon McCollum reached an agreement on a three-year, $48 million extension that includes $35.4 million guaranteed.

McCollum was set to be a free agent after the upcoming season, but the team made sure he stayed with them as one of their young, emerging leaders on defense gets locked up. Coming out of Sam Houston State, McCollum was drafted 157th overall in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Bucs and immediately showed everyone that he was going to be a steal of the draft.

The Bucs have made it a point that they believe the future of their secondary is in their youth, and McCollum is going to be a part of that. He will be a leader among rookies like Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish, just as safety Antoine Winfield Jr. was for him.
