The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are dealing with a familiar offseason storyline as star defensive tackle Vita Vea remains sidelined during mandatory minicamp due to his contract situation. But while some fans may be worried about the status of one of the team’s most important defensive players, ESPN analyst and former Buccaneer Booger McFarland isn’t among them.
Vea has been present at mandatory minicamp, avoiding league fines, but has not participated in on-field drills as he enters the final season of his current contract. The two-time Pro Bowler is scheduled to earn $17 million in 2026, none of which is guaranteed, leading to speculation that he is seeking a new extension from the Buccaneers.
McFarland recently addressed the situation and made it clear that he isn’t concerned about the apparent hold in.
“I think he just wants a bit of a pay bump,” McFarland said, noting that nothing about the situation appears contentious between Vea and the Buccaneers organization. It’s easy to understand why McFarland remains calm. Vea has established himself as the centerpiece of Tampa’s defense since being selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Even at 31 years old, the massive nose tackle continues to play at a high level, starting all 17 games last season while recording 34 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 13 quarterback hits.
Head coach Todd Bowles has also downplayed the situation, stating that the team doesn’t need to see Vea on the practice field during minicamp and expects him to be ready for training camp. Bowles called the situation “part of the business” and emphasized that Vea is healthy. With training camp still weeks away, there appears to be little reason for panic.
The Buccaneers understand Vea’s importance to Todd Bowles’ defense, while Vea has repeatedly shown his commitment to the organization. As McFarland sees it, this is simply another contract negotiation involving one of the franchise’s cornerstone players rather than the beginning of a prolonged standoff.
