“Unfortunately, about 10 minutes later we received other calls about an unresponsive male floating in the water in the 1600 block of Gulf Shore Blvd. N.,” said Lt. Bryan McGinn, Naples police spokesman.

When rescue units arrived at the scene, CPR was initiated but responders were not able to save the man, McGinn said.

The man’s identity has not been released.

Naples police are actively investigating.

While a definitive cause of death has not been released for the 85-year-old, another recent drowning occurred June 29 in the 2600 block of Golfside Court in North Naples.

A witness reported seeing a man face down in the lake and a golf cart on a golf course. The man did not respond to CPR.

Florida ranks high among all states for drowning-related deaths in all age categories.

The state leads the nation in child drowning deaths, especially for children ages 1 to 4, according to the state Department of Health.
