ST. LUCIE COUNTY − A bicycle rider sustained incapacitating injuries Tuesday as the Florida Highway Patrol reported two vehicles struck him and his bicycle on U.S. 1, the agency stated Wednesday.
The crash at U.S. 1 and North 25th Street in northern St. Lucie County was reported at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, according to the FHP. The agency Tuesday described the crash as a possible fatality and indicated southbound U.S. 1 traffic temporarily was shut down.

Investigators determined the bicycle rider, a 38-year-old Vero Beach man, was traveling south in a designated bicycle lane, a release states.
The Vero Beach man was ahead of a southbound 2003 Oldsmobile Bravada driven by a 21-year-old Fort Pierce man. The Oldsmobile entered the bicycle lane, and collided with the bicycle and bicycle rider.
A 2013 Honda Civic driven by a 65-year-old Vero Beach man then struck the bicycle and rider.
The Oldsmobile and Honda came to a stop on the west shoulder. The bicycle and rider wound up in the southbound lanes.
The bicycle rider was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce with injuries described as incapacitating.
Meanwhile, Steve Fenner, 55, of Texas, said he, his wife, and his wife’s cousin, Destiny Rudkin, 51, of Vero Beach, came upon the crash as they traveled south en route to the beach.
Rudkin said they came over a hill and saw the aftermath.
