Since May, loyal patrons of the Bahn Thai restaurant have been wondering when they’ll once again be able to dine at one of Tallahassee’s longtime Thai staples, a place the late Tallahassee Democrat food critic Ashby Stiff once praised in a 1992 review as a place for “spicy curries and sizzling sauces to relish.”
The anticipation was evident when posts and questions like these popped up on the Tallahassee Foodies social media group: “Any update on Bahn Thai? We miss them so much!!! Anything we can do to help them open again?”
Owner Ken Paluek confirmed in an email exchange with the Tallahassee Democrat that while Bahn Thai has closed its Apalachee Parkway storefront, they’re going right down the street to 1108 S. Magnolia Drive.
That location was most recently the home of Aaru’s Multicuisine Restaurant, which is moving to Capital Circle Northeast, and Mayuri Indian Restaurant before that, now just off Magnolia on Simpson Avenue. Longtime residents will remember the spot as the home of the Catfish Pad seafood eatery.
“Right now we are working with some renovation, cleaning (and) hopefully able to take off next week,” Paleuk said.
Paleuk said rising rent, insurance costs and ongoing maintenance issues prompted the move from the Apalachee Parkway location, where the restaurant had operated in recent years. That had long been a Village Inn and later home of the locally-owned Pappas Diner.
Before relocating there, Bahn Thai spent decades at its original South Monroe Street location. They are popular for curries, stir-fries and noodle plates as well as soups, salads and more.
