Analyst asks if Emeka Egbuka can be the Bucs WR1 in 2026

Jared Dubin of CBS Sports recently questioned whether Emeka Egbuka can develop into the true No. 1 receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers entering the 2026 season.

Egbuka’s rookie year started fast. He caught 25 passes for 445 yards and five touchdowns across his first five games before production slowed over the remainder of the season. During the final 12 games, he finished with 38 receptions for 493 yards and one touchdown.

The conversation around Egbuka changes significantly this season because Tampa Bay no longer has Mike Evans leading the receiver room following his departure to San Francisco. That leaves a major opportunity available for someone to emerge as Baker Mayfield’s primary target.

One point raised in the article focused on Egbuka’s background at Ohio State, where he produced consistently but was never regularly asked to serve as the unquestioned focal point of the offense.

That makes 2026 an important year for both Egbuka and Tampa Bay’s passing attack. The Buccaneers clearly believe he can become a major piece of the offense moving forward, but this season may determine whether he can consistently handle the workload and defensive attention that comes with being a true WR1 in the NFL.
