Alachua County Sheriff's Office: Man, 55, dies after being shot by deputies

An armed 55-year-old man was shot by Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies early Sept. 13 and later died from his injuries, according to an ACSO social media post.

According to the post, deputies responded to a report of suspicious man with a handgun who was beating on the front door of a residence in the Holly Heights apartment complex off Southwest Fourth Place.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they saw Darian D. Holmes “recklessly brandishing the firearm” and noted that he made comments that heightened the situation.

According to the sheriff’s office, Holmes had 14 prior felony convictions, including two convictions for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The deputies attempted to negotiate with Holmes for about 40 minutes but at one point, shots were fired, and four deputies discharged their service weapons. Holmes was immediately provided medical care at the scene and then transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

As is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the incident. The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
