ACC Basketball Power Rankings: Duke, Louisville lead early surge after Week 2 shakeups

As the early stretch of the 2025–26 ACC men’s basketball season unfolds, first impressions are taking shape — and surprises are emerging.

With just two weeks of play in the books, several traditional powerhouses are already asserting themselves, while others look more fragile than their preseason billing promised. This week’s ACC power rankings reflect not just wins and losses, but efficiency, depth, and poise under pressure. With more conference play looming, this is where things could shift dramatically — and the teams that rise early may define the narrative for the rest of the season.

Here are our updated power rankings after Week 2 of the college basketball season.

No. 18: Boston College Eagles (2-2)

Boston College is 2–2, the only ACC team at .500 through Week 2. That even start puts them at the bottom of the power rankings: while they’ve avoided a losing record, they haven’t built momentum, and their non-conference performance is less convincing than most peers. The Eagles have struggled to produce consistent offensive outputs and fight through defensive breakdowns; there’s work to do in recruiting and identity to climb the list.

No. 17: California Golden Bears (3–1)

Cal is 3–1 through two weeks. Their early win-loss record is solid, but in this ranking, they sit near last because their wins haven’t come against top-tier teams, and their overall analytic profile (strength of schedule, offensive/defensive efficiency) trails other ACC squads.

No. 16: Virginia Tech Hokies (4–0)

Virginia Tech is surprisingly 4–0 early. Even with that perfect start, they rank this low because of a weak early schedule and limited evidence that they can compete with upper-tier ACC teams. Their metrics may improve if they win stronger non-conference games.

No. 15: Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3–1)

Notre Dame is 3–1. Their placement toward the bottom half is due to a combination of mediocre margin-of-victory and limited high-end wins. They have some talent, but compared to the upper ACC programs, they’re not yet a threat to contend for the top.

No. 14: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (3–1)

Georgia Tech enters Week 3 at 3–1. They’ve shown flashes, but consistency is an issue, and their early resume lacks the strength that the top ACC teams have. Their depth and experience may help, but right now they’re behind teams that have already looked more dominant.

No. 13: Miami Hurricanes (3–1)

Miami is also 3–1. The Hurricanes have talent, but inconsistency has held them back through two weeks. Compared to the top teams, Miami lacks high-impact wins (including getting blown out by Florida) and hasn’t shown enough dominance to break into the top half confidently — yet.

No. 12: Florida State Seminoles (2–1)

FSU is 2–1 early in the season. Their 2–1 start is respectable, but not eye-popping, and they’re behind in the power rankings due to early-season lapses and questions about how reliably they can compete with top-tier ACC teams. Their placement reflects upside as they showed nearly taking down the defending NCAA champs, but also risk.

No. 11: Wake Forest Demon Deacons (3–1)

Wake Forest sits at 3–1, but that lone loss comes with important context — the Demon Deacons were one shot at the buzzer away from upsetting Michigan, one of the top-ranked teams in the country. That near-miss significantly boosts their perception compared to other mid-tier ACC programs.

No. 10: Pittsburgh Panthers (3–1)

Pitt enters at 3–1. Their early win-loss split is similar to Clemson’s, but they’re placed slightly lower because of weaker margin of victory and less proven depth. That said, their analytic profile suggests they’re in the second tier of ACC contenders for now, although they have a lot to improve as a squad.

No. 9: Syracuse Orange (3–0)

Syracuse is off to a 3–0 start. Their classic zone defense is working, and they’ve shown enough grit to be ranked just inside the mid-pack. They don’t have the star power of the top ACC teams, but their system and early results make them a dark horse.

No. 8: Stanford Cardinals (3–0)

Stanford has also posted a 3–0 mark. While they don’t have the same national prestige as Duke or UNC, their efficient start and surprising strength (especially on offense) make them a sleeper in the upper ACC tier. Their consistency through two weeks suggests they could climb if they take advantage of non-conference games.

No. 7: Clemson Tigers (3–1)

Clemson has opened 3–1. Their one loss against Georgetown keeps them from breaking into the top tier, but the Tigers still look solid. Their non-conference performance shows they’re competitive, though they don’t yet match Duke or Louisville in offensive explosiveness or projected upside.

No. 6: SMU Mustangs (4–0)

SMU sits at 4–0. While they’re not traditionally ACC powerhouses, their perfect start, disciplined guard play, and favorable early schedule push them into the top third. Relative to teams with early losses, SMU’s consistency is a big differentiator.

No. 5: Virginia Cavaliers (4–0)

Virginia is 4–0 to begin the season as well. Their high ranking reflects not just the wins but how they’ve won — methodically, with balanced scoring, and solid defense. Compared to teams like Clemson or Miami, Virginia’s combination of experience and system gives them a stable floor.

No. 4: NC State Wolfpack (3–0)

NC State has started 3–0. Their place just behind the top three comes down to schedule strength: while they haven’t lost, their opponents haven’t been quite as tested, and they lack the blowout dominance Duke has shown. Nonetheless, their clean slate and solid roster continuity give them strong upside.

No. 3: North Carolina Tar Heels (4–0)

UNC is 4–0 to open the season. Despite being unbeaten, their ranking at No. 3 reflects some uncertainty: they lost a key rotation piece (Seth Trimble) to injury, which could matter down the road. They’ve performed well, but other top teams (like Duke and Louisville) are showing more consistency and higher ceilings early.

No. 2: Louisville Cardinals (4–0)

Louisville is also 4–0 early, matching Duke but slightly behind in this ranking because, while their wins have been decisive, they haven’t yet faced a marquee non-conference opponent. Their roster — led by strong guard play — was highly rated in preseason, and their clean start underscores why they’re seen as a legitimate title threat.

No. 1: Duke Blue Devils (4–0)

Duke is off to a perfect 4–0 start, the only ACC team to remain unbeaten through two weeks. Their dominant early scoring — including a 100-point outburst — and top preseason expectations (picked No. 1 in several polls) propel them to the top. Compared to other ACC teams, Duke has shown elite offensive firepower and efficiency, giving them a clear edge.
