Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga could sign qualifying offer ahead of new season

Jonathan Kuminga’s contractual stalemate with the Golden State Warriors is still ongoing. However, with training camp just weeks away, a resolution must be found. As such, Kuminga likely has two choices: sign the deal on the table from the Warriors, or sign his qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

According to Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area, it would appear Kuminga is more likely to lean into his qualifying offer than to agree to a new deal with the franchise. If Kuminga does sign his qualifying offer, he will have a considerable amount of control over his future. He could use his expiring contract as a de facto no-trade clause by refusing to re-sign with a team if they attempt to trade for him. Furthermore, the Warriors would be running the risk of losing one of their best young assets next summer, with nothing coming back in return.

“He entered September facing two options,” Poole wrote. “One, accept Golden State’s qualifying offer of $7.99 million. Two, sign a two-year contract at $45 million, with a team option in Year 2. He has shown no interest in that. Kuminga has shown more interest in the qualifying offer – which gives him trade veto power and puts him on the market next summer – than the two-year deal preferred by Golden State that pays more but diminishes his leverage.”

Kuminga has explored his options this summer. Reports have linked him as having talks with the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns. However, the Warriors have been reluctant to entertain sign-and-trade discussions. Now, with preseason preparations around the corner, Kuminga has a decision to make. If he does sign his qualifying offer, the Warriors will likely explore the trade market for him between now and the February 2026 trade deadline.

Unfortunately for Kuminga, he’s been unable to secure a consistent role in Steve Kerr’s rotation. Therefore, a potential move away from the franchise makes sense. Yet for the Warriors, the issue will be that once he signs his qualifying offer, he controls his own narrative, and that will drastically reduce his trade value.
