It has been a remarkable start to the season for the USC baseball team. The Trojans’ entered the weekend 12-0 as Illinois traveled to Dedeaux Field for the first Big Ten series of the season.
Sure enough, another series meant another sweep for USC. The Trojans posted 4-0 shutout victories on both Friday and Saturday before coming back to win 5-3 on Sunday.
In addition to being 3-0 in the Big Ten, USC is now an incredible 15-0 on the season. That ties the 1988 team for the best start in program history. The Trojans will have the opportunity to break the record on Tuesday night when Long Beach State visits Dedeaux Field.
While USC has produced numerous MLB stars over the decades, interestingly, the biggest name on that 1988 team was actually a football player. Former USC All-American quarterback Rodney Peete, who would go on to have a lengthy NFL career, also played baseball for the Trojans, and was a member of the 1988 squad that also opened 15-0. Peete was selected in the MLB Draft four times, but ultimately decided to pursue a professional career in football instead.
This upcoming week will be a busy one for the Trojans, as they will play five games. In addition to the aforementioned Long Beach State game, USC will host San Diego on Wednesday night, before heading out on the team’s first Big Ten road trip of the year with a three-game series at Northwestern.
