Rookie quarterback Ty Simpson has completed his first two preseason games for the Los Angeles Rams, taking on the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, and the New Orleans Saints at SoFi Stadium. Simpson was excellent in those contests, playing within the structure of the offense, with his body of work making it clear that he was not nervous for the moment. His performances have been exactly what the team needed from the first-round pick, and have made it clear the Rams did not whiff on the Alabama product.
Going 21-for-25 for 190 yards and two touchdowns on his debut, Simpson avoided committing big mistakes while guiding the Rams up-and-down the field. What really impressed was his targeting of tight ends and running backs. He found running back Dean Connors for both his touchdowns, while Max Klare and Mark Redman had massive performances.
The decision-making ability was evident, and the zip on his passes has to excite fans. Entering the game against New Orleans, Simpson would face a bit more pressure, as the Saints had film on him and they faced him in a joint practice earlier in the week. Despite that, the rookie went 8-for-12 passing with 73 yards and did not commit a turnover.
These numbers are not going to jump off the page, but they’re illustrating that Simpson is at the very least on pace with his development. As he continues to grow, the constant distribution of the football could be the piece that allows the team to transition away from Matthew Stafford without jeopardizing the consistency of the offense.
It’s a welcome sight after such a controversial selection.
