Although Sean McVay has said his “grumpy” demeanor during a press conference on draft night was completely unrelated to the Ty Simpson selection, we still don’t know the reason for his poor mood. He seemed dejected and disinterested while fielding questions next to Les Snead, which is atypical of the usually exuberant coach – especially on a night as exciting as the draft.
NBC Sports’ Chris Simms got a little insight into the matter while hanging out with McVay at the Arsenal game in London this week. He says McVay told him it was due to “some sort of volatile situation” before the press conference; Simms also called it a “little argument.”
“What he did tell me was the reason he, in the press conference, was pissed off had neither to do with him acting or the pick, but had to do with some sort of volatile situation that happened before they went out there,” Simms said. “There was some little argument about something. He assured me it was nothing major, but he was a little peed off. That’s what he told me. I don’t think he’d have any problem with me sharing that and that was that.”
Simms didn’t share any further details about the argument, and it’s unlikely McVay even told him specifically what the dispute was about, but McVay was clearly bothered by something.
Thanks to seemingly endless media appearances, we’ve been told countless times since the draft that McVay is fully on board with the selection of Simpson. McVay has said he likes Simpson, Snead has assured everyone they work in tandem, and even Mike LaFleur has confirmed McVay’s interest in Simpson goes back months.
Whatever it was that set McVay off seems to be water under the bridge because he and Snead were in good spirits the rest of draft weekend.
