The Golden State Warriors were hunting for a star this offseason but unfortunately fell short. Giannis Antetokounmpo landed with the Miami Heat, LeBron James signed with Philadelphia and Kawhi Leonard returned to Toronto (for now).
However, Jaylen Brown, the star that Golden State seemed to be interested in the least, may have been the most attainable. According to Warriors insider Danny Emerman, Golden State could have “matched or exceeded” the Sixers’ offer for Brown. Emerman also noted that talks between the two sides “never really got serious.”
While a move for Brown certainly would have depleted the Warriors’ future assets, it might have been the move necessary to return to contention along with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and two of Brown’s former teammates, Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford. To match salaries, Jimmy Butler III would have been the most likely trade candidate in a swap for Brown.
Had Brown been dealt to the Bay Area, it could have swayed 23-year veteran LeBron James to join as well.
