An 18-year-old Piru man was identified as the driver who died in a crash into a tree Aug. 4 on Highway 23 in Moorpark.
The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Jirhet Cruz. His cause and manner of death are pending, agency officials said.
Cruz’s vehicle was found by California Highway Patrol Officers who were called to the highway near Happy Camp Road around 3 a.m. A caller reported seeing a car on fire, CHP said previously. The area is located along Highway 23 near Grimes Canyon Road.
Cruz, the only person in the vehicle, was pronounced dead on the scene, CHP said.
His family has started a fundraising page to help pay for his funeral expenses. The site says he was a 2026 graduate of Moorkpark High School and the oldest of four boys.
