Authorities identified the pedestrian who died after being hit and run over by a truck coming out of an Oxnard mall off of West Channel Islands Boulevard on July 24.
Cleofas Apolonio Lopez Lopez, 59, was from Oxnard, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office. The cause of his death is blunt force injuries and the manner of his death is an accident.
On July 24 around 9:01 a.m., Oxnard Police Department officers responded to a call of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the 100 block of West Channel Islands Boulevard, near the intersection of Saviers Road, according to a department news release.
Officers found Lopez Lopez lying in the driveway of the Center Point Mall in critical condition and had an ambulance take him to a local hospital, officials said.
Officers also found a Toyota Tacoma in the driveway of the mall and the truck’s driver, a 53-year-old Oxnard woman, reported to officers she had hit and run over the Oxnard man, police said.
The driver cooperated with police and an initial investigation revealed the driver had been traveling southbound through the mall driveway to access the exit for Channel Islands Boulevard, officials said. The driver said “she stopped at the exit to check for traffic.”
Lopez Lopez was walking eastbound on the sidewalk of Channel Islands Boulevard, when he was crossing the mall driveway entrance to continue walking east, police said.
The driver moved forward to make a right on Channel Islands Boulevard and struck the pedestrian, causing him to fall on the ground, but “did not notice the crash,” officials said. She continued to make her turn and her truck “ran over the pedestrian,” the release says.
Lopez Lopez died at the hospital that evening at 5:36 p.m. due to injuries from the crash.
