Oak Park slugs its way to first softball playoff win since 2012

Riley Scupine went 4 for 4 with a home run as the Oak Park High softball team powered its way to its first playoff win since 2012.

All nine starters had a hit as the Eagles piled up 17 hits in a 10-4 win at Cerritos-Valley Christian in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 playoffs on Friday, May 15.

“That’s a big win for us,” said Oak Park coach Casey Preston. “Whenever we hit, good things happen.”

Maddie Scupine was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored and Julia Katz, Sophia Casella, Shaila Esparza and Sailor Platt also had two hits.

After Valley Christian tied the score 3-3 in the third inning, Oak Park regained the lead on Riley Sculpine’s solo home run to centerfield, which spurred a five-run fourth inning.

Oak Park (17-10) will host Riverside Prep in Saturday’s second round.

Division 5

Grace 11, Buena Park 0 (5 inn.): Grace Maguire was 3 for 4 with a three-run home run and Addie Feola also hit a three-run home run as Grace only needed five innings to advance.

“They came out and it was base hit after base hit,” said Grace coach Heidi Bird.

Rosy Salazar and Eden Tuso combined for a run-rule shorted no-hitter for the Lancers.

Salazar struck out seven in four innings. Tuso pitched a clean inning. Neither walked a batter, but the Lancers did commit an error.

Grace (14-10) will host Crean Lutheran in Saturday’s second round.

Division 7

Bloomington 9, Fillmore 8: Down 7-3 in the top of the seventh, Fillmore scored five runs to take a late lead on the road.

But host Bloomington responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to walk it off.

Azaria Aguilar was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Angelica Ruiz went 3 for 5 for Fillmore (11-12).
