Former NFL defensive lineman Kevin Johnson, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders in the 1990s, died Wednesday morning after being found unconscious at a homeless encampment in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said Johnson, 55, suffered “blunt head trauma and stab wounds.” His death has been ruled a homicide, and police are investigating.
Johnson was discovered shortly after sunrise and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities believe he had been living at the encampment, where friends said he had struggled with health challenges in recent years.

From Texas Southern standout to NFL journeyman
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Johnson emerged as a talented defender at Texas Southern University. His collegiate play earned him a spot in the 1993 NFL Draft, where he was selected in the fourth round by the New England Patriots.
Johnson’s NFL career stretched across several teams and included stints with the Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, and ultimately the Philadelphia Eagles, where he carved out his most productive stretch. In two seasons with the Eagles, Johnson tallied 43 tackles, seven sacks, and returned a fumble for a touchdown.
He appeared in 38 career NFL games—including 15 for the Raiders in 1997—before transitioning to the Arena Football League, where he played for teams in Orlando and Los Angeles.
Post-NFL Life marked by declining health
Friends and acquaintances told investigators that Johnson had experienced a decline in health in recent years, a downturn that contributed to his housing instability, ESPN reported. Those who knew him at the encampment described him as quiet and friendly.
Los Angeles police have not released information about suspects or potential motives. Detectives are urging anyone with information about Johnson’s final days to come forward.
