Justin Herbert injury update: Jim Harbaugh reveals severity, timeline

Quarterback Justin Herbert fractured a bone in his left (non-throwing) hand during the Chargers’ victory over the Raiders on Sunday. Herbert is scheduled for surgery on Monday, and his status for future games is uncertain, head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed.

When asked if he’ll miss time, Herbert said doctors are “pretty hopeful” he won’t have to.

“It’s one of those things where you just stabilize it. I’m not the doctor, but yeah, they were hopeful. So I think that’s a good thing,” Herbert added.

The injury occurred in the first quarter of the game when Herbert’s left hand collided with safety Jeremy Chinn’s helmet on a scramble. Despite the injury, he threw a touchdown pass on the next play to wide receiver Quentin Johnston.

Herbert briefly left the game to go to the locker room for evaluation, and backup quarterback Trey Lance took over for one series. He returned during the same drive, wearing a large, padded glove with a hard cast underneath on his injured hand, and finished the game.

Herbert completed 15 of 20 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns, along with an interception.

Herbert said he plans to treat the injury as if he’ll play the Eagles next Monday night. But if he can’t go, Lance will start at quarterback.
