It’s time for another round of Friday Night Hero as Week 2 of the high school football season produced some more top-notch performances.
Before we get to those, though, let’s reflect back on Week 1 and how your vote turned out. You had six elite efforts to choose from and you voted for Shadow Hills quarterback Jesse Rodriguez.
Good choice! He accounted for a whopping seven touchdown (six passing and one rushing) in a lopsided win over Indio.

Whichever player has the most votes by noon on Thursday will be your winner. Here are this week’s candidates in alphabetical order. Happy voting!
Anderson Acosta, Xavier Prep
What he did: Acosta, the sophomore standout, had a busy night on the ground against Desert Hot Springs, rushing for 148 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries in the Saints’ convincing victory.
Roman Ansley, La Quinta
What he did: Ansley was lethal with the deep ball in this one, hitting on touchdown passes of 23, 57, 17 and 15 yards in a win over Yucca Valley. His most impressive moments came in a 96-yard TD drive that began with 1:30 left in the half. He ran for two first downs, threw for three and ended with a TD pass.
Josiah Casillas, Rancho Mirage
What he did: In his first varsity game, the freshman defensive back was living in the Coachella Valley backfield, registering three tackles for loss as the Rattlers defense stymied CV all night in an important victory.
Bishop Miller V, Palm Springs
What he did: The Indians’ quarterback had three touchdown passes, including the game-winner in a 28-21 win over Grand Terrace. Miller had TD passes of 19 yards, 19 yards and 11 yards to lift the Indians to a 2-0 start.
Simon Simonian, La Quinta
What he did: In his debut game as the lead back, the sophomore looked ready for the job, mixing speed and power on his way to 152 yards rushing and one touchdown. He also caught a touchdown pass, had a 50-yard kickoff return and had a chase-down tackle at cornerback that saved a touchdown.
