Firefighter working the Green Fire north of Redding injured on Sunday

A firefighter assigned to the Green Fire burning in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest northeast of Redding was taken to a hospital on Sunday after being injured while on duty.

U.S. Forest Service spokesperson Tom Stokenberry did not release any other information about the firefighter’s duties or their injuries in a statement from the agency. Stokenberry said the forest service would provide more information when it became available.

The injury was the first reported from the growing Green Fire, which as of Sunday morning the forest service reported it had burned 10,334 acres, though mapping later in the day showed the fire’s perimeter at 11,127 acres, according to Watch Duty, a volunteer-run platform that provides wildfire maps and information in real time.

Also over the weekend, a firefighter received medical treatment due to a heat-related illness.

Extreme weather that’s brought dry, temperature highs ranging from 95 degrees to 110 degrees and wind have challenged crews fighting the fire. The forest service reported it had 15 ambulances staged around the forest where firefighters are conducting suppression efforts.

Sunday’s temperature reached a high of 108 degrees. A heat advisory was in effect through 11 p.m. Monday in parts of the Sacramento Valley, including greater Redding.

Fire officials have about 1,200 personnel assigned to the Green Fire. In addition to watercraft and aircrafts sent to the fire, two “Super Scooper” planes have joined in the firefighting efforts and were dropping water on the fire.
