The 2025-26 Central Section high school sports season is underway.
Coaches, please submit your results/stats after each game or match to sports reporter Vongni Yang at vyang2@gannett.com to have players highlighted in our local roundup (team records are as of April 2).
April 1
Baseball
Exeter 3, Woodlake 1: The Monarchs (13-4-1) captured the Ron Robinson Classic championship.
Winning pitcher Tanner Garnett tossed a complete game, firing 18 strikeouts in a two-hitter. He gave up two walks in a dominant outing.
Also for Exeter, Cade McElmoyl went 2-for-3 with a home run. Brayden Velasquez and Ivan Pepe each had two hits.
The Monarch also had tournament wins over Mira Monte, 13-3, Caruthers, 11-1, and Mendota, 2-0.
In four classic games, Exeter outscored its foes a combined 29-5.
Pepe, Madden Pasos, and Ryan Hernandez also each posted a tournament victory on the mound.
March 31
Baseball
42nd annual Tulare/Visalia Pro-PT Invitational: No championship game was played this year due to weather, but two teams did finish 4-0 in their respective division.
In the upper division, Garces (13-3) went 4-0 with wins over Independence, 5-2, Mt. Whitney, 5-3, Mission Oak, 9-1, and Tehachapi, 10-5.
Golden West (8-9) also concluded tournament play with an undefeated 4-0 record, beating Arvin 7-2, Golden Valley 11-1, California City 15-2, and Corcoran 7-1.
Also in the upper division, Tulare Western (9-5-1) and Kingsburg (12-5) both completed the two-day tournament with identical 3-0 records. They were originally scheduled to play each other on day one of the tournament, but the game was postponed due to time.
Shafter (8-5) also finished with a 3-0 record in the lower division.
March 27
Softball
Tulare Union 7, Bakersfield Christian 4: Jiannah Freitas blasted another home run to lift the Tribe (5-11) to a non-league victory.
Freitas finished with two RBIs and a run. Her younger sister, Jaksyn Freitas, also drove in two runs on two hits, including a double.
Jiannah Freitas also earned the win in the circle, hurling a strikeout in five innings, two of them scoreless. Freshman Ava Hernandez had two strikeouts in one frame.
Abagail Haslam, also a freshman, went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Faith Jimenez and Aliyah Cardenas each had a hit.
