Warriors forward Draymond Green recently opened up about his decision to return to Golden State this summer after declining his player option. While Green was never expected to leave, there was speculation that the former Michigan State forward would sign a multi-year deal instead of a one-year pact.
“I did resign for the same amount that I opted out of. Obviously there was hope that we would land a guy with the mid-level slot, which didn’t happen, so I opted back in a sense to my deal. You know, it was kind of no other reason to not do that.”
Green went on to say that he could’ve fought for a no-trade clause but said it “wasn’t worth fighting over” because he wouldn’t want to stay anywhere he “wasn’t wanted.”
Last season, the former Defensive Player of the Year Award winner averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.6 blocks, earning an 11th place finish in DPOY voting. Ahead of his 15th NBA season, if Green makes 51 appearances next year, he’ll reach the 1,000 game milestone.
