Your walk from the juror parking lot to the Shasta County Courthouse will soon be a bit less precarious.
The city of Redding plans to revitalize the section of Oregon Street between Shasta and Yuba streets, including the addition of a pedestrian crossing and ADA ramps at Butte Street, construction of sidewalks in areas where they are missing and beautification features.
The project, which has a $1.9 million price tag, will be funded at 95% by a grant from the state’s Clean California program, and be completed by local contractor J.F. Shea, according to a June 28 statement from the city.
The project is set to break ground in early August and be completed by Nov. 1, 2026.

The project will notably add crosswalks, curb ramps, and bulbed out sidewalk corners to the crossing between the juror parking lot and the courthouse at the intersection of Butte and Oregon, which currently has none.
According to the statement, the enclosure of Calaboose Creek is designed to “prevent litter from entering a waterway that supports endangered Chinook salmon downstream.” The new culvert will be installed next to Oregon Street in the stretch between Shasta and Tehama streets, as well as around a shorter exposed section of the creek just north of Yuba Street.
The city will partner with local nonprofit organization, Plantable, with a fully grant-funded contract to complete beautification and litter abatement on Oregon Street.
“This is another win for the City of Redding,” said Josh Anthony, assistant director of Public Works in the statement. “… Projects like this allow us to improve safety, connectivity, and appearance while stretching local dollars as far as possible.”
The Record Searchlight was unable to reach the Public Works Department or Plantable for further comment before deadline on July 29.
The Oregon Street Improvement Project grant and other grants to improve the city were awarded by the Clean California program in October 2023.
