A 59-year-old man was arrested this week and charged with felony murder for allegedly shooting and killing another man in Coachella in September.
Jail records show Rafael Moreno was arrested Tuesday night near a residence in the 85000 block of Nile Lane in Coachella, following a monthlong investigation by Riverside County Sheriff’s Department investigators. He was being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center with a “no bail” designation.
The arrest came a month after a man, later identified as 51-year-old Enrique Arrieta, was found when deputies responded at 11:37 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, to the intersection of Calle Limon and Genoa Street for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.
Deputies found Arrieta lying on the ground with a possible gunshot wound. Despite life-saving measures taken by the deputies, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In addition to the felony murder charge, jail records show Moreno is also facing a felony charge for being a felon in possession of a firearm, as well as a misdemeanor for the unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and no additional suspects are being sought in connection with the case, according to the sheriff’s department.
