The Chargers still have some work to do after the first wave of free agency.
Several spots throughout this roster must be filled, some of which will be left for the 2026 NFL Draft. Let’s look specifically at which positions general manager Joe Hortiz needs to address.
Guard
As a part of the interior offensive line reconstruction, the Chargers have signed center Tyler Biadasz and guard Cole Strange while re-signing Trey Pipkins and Trevor Penning. As of now, Strange appears to be the presumed starter at right guard. However, they still need a starter at left guard following Zion Johnson’s departure to the Browns.
Edge rusher
The team retained Khalil Mack on a one-year extension, but Odafe Oweh signed with the Commanders. Having Mack back is crucial, but finding a high-upside young edge rusher to play opposite Tuli Tuipulotu is a major priority for long-term stability.
Cornerback
The Chargers have a solid core between Donte Jackson, Tarheeb Still, and Cam Hart. Nikko Reed is also a cornerback to watch for in 2026. But the Chargers should look to add a high-end piece to this room for defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary, especially with Jackson entering the final year of his two-year deal.
Safety
The Chargers return Derwin James Jr. and Elijah Molden. R.J. Mickens flashed in his rookie season. But with James continuing to play nickel/slot, they need a safety who can cover the deep parts of the field.
Wide receiver
The Chargers have a good group of young wideouts heading into next season between Ladd McConkey, Tre Harris, and Quentin Johnston (should he not be traded). But this positional group could benefit greatly from a speed element in offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s system, and one with special teams value.
